![]() ![]() I’m a mixed race reader, but I saw no reason to be offended. Had it been published on 2017, would readers be offended by “mudblood?” One of the complaints about this book was the use of the word “half-breed” to describe certain races. Harry Potter was not without its share of prejudice either. While it’s not quite as addictive as Harry Potter, I thought it was imaginative and thrilling. ![]() ![]() Obvious comparisons will be made to Harry Potter, but the world in “The Black Witch” felt totally unique to me. As the descendant of a famous witch, 17-year-old Elloren escapes marriage (or rather, the “wandfasting” ritual) and attends university instead, where she encounters many fantastical races. The story revolves around a naive (but flawed) Elloren, whose harsh opinions of other races are the product of how she was raised. Fiction is supposed to make you uncomfortable at times, and your characters need room to grow. ![]() But people are acting like this book is a hate crime, and they’re completely missing the point. Are there racist themes in this book? Yes. I was especially interested in checking out this book after seeing it unfairly trashed on Goodreads, mostly by people who haven’t read it. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The blood mages would get special spellbooks made, then they’d cut themselves open and bleed onto a page they ripped out with their chosen spell, and then *poof* magic! The spellbooks provided some balance and limitation to the power of blood magic and were almost a unique kind of weapon the blood mages kept with them at all times. Jokes aside, I actually did think the magic system was pretty cool, or what I understood of it, at least. Wow, I’ve only just started this review, and I’m already WAY off topic. Forget magic textile-making, sewing, and dry cleaning-THOSE are the skills to have in this world. Anyone who works in the clothing industry in this country must make a shit ton of money because these characters’ clothes are constantly getting ruined. And most of the time, they did so without even flinching. These characters were always covered in blood, or dripping blood, or slicing open themselves and others. I’m glad I read reviews before reading this one and had some idea of what to expect and could just enjoy the dramatic, blood-drenched goodness. ![]() ![]() ![]() India that the British East India Company conquered was no primitive or barren land, but the glittering jewel of the medieval world. "Company official John Sullivan observed in the 1840s: 'The little court disappears - the capital decays - trade languishes - the capital decays - the people are impoverished - the Englishman flourishes, and acts like a sponge, drawing up riches from the banks of the Ganges, and squeezing them down upon the banks of the Thames'. The following quote summarises the core theme of the book. Subsequently, his publisher floated the idea to transform the speech into a book despite being initially skeptical, he went on to write a 330 page book. There’s something very off-putting to me about those titles. ![]() ![]() It’s not as common now, but for a while it was a thing to ostensibly name a novel for a female character but in the same breath define said woman by her relationship to a man. At the same time, though, I was leery of the title. On one hand, pirates! The blurb on the cover promised me a female Captain Jack Sparrow, and that struck me as a fun idea. I wasn’t entirely sure what to think of Daughter of the Pirate King before I began it. ![]() For the most part they’re vague or obvious or both, but still. However, there is something-or rather, some one-she did not count on: Riden, the first mate who seems able to see through her deceptions and who she finds unexpectedly charming. Alosa is stronger and more skilled than any other pirate, so she is confident in her ability to accomplish her mission quickly and easily. Alosa is the daughter of the pirate king, and she has gotten herself intentionally kidnapped by the son of powerful pirate lord so that she can steal a valuable map fragment that will lead her father to a hidden island guarded by sirens and home to untold treasures. ![]() ![]() K-9 Solid coloured Wheels 57mm 97a 80s Whiteĭogtown Skate Wheels K9 57mm 97a 80s White has hit our Australian shores, and the wait is over.
